    About the Area

“With her flickering carriage lanterns, cobblestone streets, exquisite colonial-era mansions, and manicured flower boxes, Charleston, South Carolina is a timeless beauty.  And while the trappings of this jewel box-like destination are historic, a palpable vitality is evident.  From the upbeat vibe of upper King Street to the rarefied scenery tucked south of Broad Street, the fascinating juxtaposition of new and old makes today’s Charleston a must-visit destination.  It has been voted consistently “Top City in the United States” in the Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards.

It’s no secret Charleston is home to a variety of culinary luminaries and boasts some of the best food in the country.  The area’s pulse has been connected to its kitchens since the late 1600s, when subsistence farming and fishing unknowingly gave birth to today’s prized hyper-local Lowcountry cuisine.

For more than 300 years, Charleston’s evocative beauty has inspired painters, poets, playwrights, and musicians.  Stroll down the signature blue slate sidewalks beneath a canopy of crepe myrtle trees, past the gleaming windows of French Quarter galleries, and it isn’t difficult to see what inspired noted artist Alfred Hutty in 1920 to write, ‘Come quickly, have found heaven.’ ” (compliments of explorecharleston.com)
